agricultural region aiul tar-lanictl as a niaiui lacluring
town. I'ho water ]-)owcr at this point is one of tlu-
\ er\- host, there being a water tall ol' 7,:; feet from tin-
stone dam at the bridge between Anson and Madison
to a point one mile below. The last twenty years ha\e
brought to ?^Iadison and her sister town, Anson, the
greater part of her development and prosperity
The date of the settlement of Madison b}- the white
man is placed, b\ those who are informed regarding
the town's past, at some time between the dates ol
1773 and 1775.
Who the lirst white man was to set toot on the
soil of Madison we have no way of knowing. It may
have been the far-famed Driiillette of whom we ha\e
pre\iousl\' matle mention. Or, more indetinitely, it
ma\" ha\e been some adxenturous hunter who had been
willing to run the risks incident to a trip along the river
at the time when the territorN' belonged undisputedl}'
to the saxage. But the tirst recorded arrixal of which
we know was that of Father Druillette, who passed
through this town on his wa\" down the ri\er, in 1646,
to establish his mission near Cushnoc (Augusta).
Later he made se\ eral tri]is up and down the rixer as
he accompanied his dusk\- conxerts on their fishing and
hunting trips along the water com"se. The next re-
corded arrixal is blather Rasle who came, as we ha\e
heretofore noted, in 1695, more than torty years atter
the departure of Father Druillette. Rasle ma\- be
properly termed the first white settler of Madison, as
he settled here with his redskins and li\ed here till liis
death, which occurred, as hereinbefore noted, in 1724.
This man who traNclled among forests ()\er the
grounds where our modern residences now sit, where
our woolen mills send forth their stead}' hum, and
14 HISTORICAL
where our paper mills convert the timber of the forest
into the huge rolls that are soon to revolve on the in-
tricate printing press and receive the impression of the
metal type, and carry lorth to the millions the products
of inteiect which he strove to teach b}' word of mouth,
was not an Englishman, but a native of France, and
highly educated in her best schools of that dav.
He was likewise the builder of the first chiu-ch
edifice in this town. We learn from Rasle's letters
written to a nephew that the chapel at the Indian vil-
lage of Norridgewock was wonderfuU}- beautified for
the time and place. It was furnished with all the tine
plate and other equipment that were found in that day
in European churches. The king of France was the
donor of certain parts of the equipment.
Madison should be tamous, even had she no other
cause, for being the resting place of the bones of this
man kno\^'n {)\er two continents.
From the time of Rasle tift}- years and more rolled
by without a recorded settlement in this town. The
town next below, Norridgewock, was tirst settled in
1772, and Madison was penetrated not long after. The
southwest corner of the town was the first portion to
be cleared b}- white settlers, and so far as can be learned,
and we have searched dilligentl}', a Mr. Sylvanus
Sawyer who settled at Old Point, was the lirst settler.
This was the first permanent re-establishment of the
settlement at this place. Of Mr. Sawyer we know but
little. He had a son, Luke Sawyer, who afterward
settled in Starks and built up the mills at that place and
gave it the name, Sawyer's Mills, b}- which it was and
is known to many. We learn froni a present resident
of Madison, Mr. Joshua Perkins, that this Luke Saw-
yer was one of those who assisted General Benedict
IIIS'I'OI^UWL 15
Arnold and liis army in i^cttin;^ their supplies and
e(|nipments around tiie tails at this place. Mr. SawNer,
we ai'e told also aecomj^anied the arm\ to the earr\ in<;'
place abo\ e liin^ham, actinj^- as a boatsman. 'I'his ex-
pedition, tearJ'ul and perilous undertaking that it was,
has nian\- interesting- leatures. It was one ol'the most
courageous etlorts in the history ol' the Continental
ariu\' in\()l\ing not onl\' the dangers ol the hattletiekl,
but what were worse the perils ol se\ere cold and
star\ation. It is interesting to note that this expedition
was conimanded hv a man who was to have the oppor-
tunit\' of' being the most heartily praised and the most
bitterK' condenmed ol any of the early ]-)atriots.
While .Vrnokrs conduct admits ot' no explanation we
cannot, howe\er, Ibrget that he was in many respects
a \ictim ot circumstances. He became, instead of the
dashing, popular oihcer he was at the time he passed
through Madison, in October, 1775, a broken man, the
most despised man in England or ^Vmerica.
It is also interesting to note that Aaron Burr, after-
wards Vice President of the United States and later
lacking but one Note to make him President, was in this
detachment when it went through this town. He was
ser\ing as a lieutenant, and went through to C^iebec,
where he carried (Tcneral Montgomery otl" the lield
wdien he had been wounded. (Tcneral Montgomery-
was a large man of nearU' two hundred pounds wdiile
"Little r^urr," as he was familiarh' called, weighed not
far from one himdred pounds.
Mr. Sawwer, the tirst settler above referred to, had
also a son, Levi, who after wards removed to New
York; a son Ephraini; and also a son, Syhanus, wlio
settled in this town about one mile Irom the \illage.
l6 IIIS'l'ORICAI.
Wlio the other settlers direetly after Mr. Sawyer
were we are unable to state detinitely, but we learn
that the settlement was made rapidly afte.r the lirst
\ears ol' the Revolutionary war were o\ er.
Deaeon Benjamin Weston was one of those who
soon followed Mr. Sawyer at an early date. lie eame
to this town in •! 7S6 and settled on tlie Theodore Weston
farm about a mile and a halt abo\e the village on the
east side oi" the ri\er. The plaee is now well known
to all citizens of this section of the valley. Deacon
W^eston, the subject of this portion of our sketch, was
born in Concord and first came to the District oi
Maine in 1771. He was accompanied by a part}' who
soon settled near Skowhegan falls in what is now
Canaan. Mrs. Weston came here in 1772, being the
first white woman to settle in Somerset county. Mr.
W^eston removed to this town, as above noted, in 1786.
He reared a large I'amily, all of vvhom huve been a
credit to this hardv, thrifty settler. The children were
the tbllowing: Stephen, born in 1789; Benjamin,
1790; Nathan, 1796; William, 1810. The daughters
were as t'ollows: Ann, born in 1792; Fannie, 1795;
Betsey, 1798; Mary, 1800; Electa, 1802; Eunice, 1804;
Hannah, 1808.
Mr. Weston was a valuable citizen and will be
long remembered. lie was in charge of the lirst ferr\-,
traces of which may be seen at this late day near his
residence, and o\er whicli all the goods consumed in
the region to the north of this place were trans-
ported. Mr, Weston, we are told, never would take
his fee from people going to or from church, from min-
isters of the gospel and from funeral processions.
Other settlers of this town to come at about this
time were John Ellis, who settled an the Skowhegan

roud as it is laid out at this time; James Sa^■age, Silas
Dantbrth and Jonathan Eames settled in the ver}- early
years and not far from the time that Mr, West eame
here, along the river farther up toward North Anson.
James wSavage cleared up the intervale farm nov^'^ owned
in separate parts by Hiram Moore and Frank Burns.
Silas Danforth settled on the farm still known as
the "Danforth" place, near Mr. Savage's. Jonathan
Eames settled where James II. Welch now li\'es. Mr.
Savage, Mr. Danforth and Mr. Eames married sisters,
presumabl\- of the Mr, ^'oung who settled near the
above mentioned three, at about this time-. His place
is now occupied by Hannibal Danforth.
Another to settle along the ri\er about this time
was (jotf' Moore, who came from Norridgewock where
lie iiad temporarily located, and took up the farm
where Eugene Burns now lixes.
In the northwest portion of the town John Burns,
Da\id Danforth and Da\ id Young settled at a \ery
earl\- date, perhaps se\eral \ears earlier than the date
of Mr. Weston's arrival. Some haNC suggested to the
writer that they came here as soon as 1776 or 1777.
We are unable to state the time.
fohn B. Moore was a resident of this town not tar
from the beginning ol the last centur\' but remoN ed in
a few years to Moose Ri\ er.
wSamuel Burns, who married Ann, daughter oi"
Deacon Weston, settled in this town at a comparati\eh'
early date. He lived on the Benjamin Adams place.
In the village there were for many years time only
a lew residents. Among the \ery "first to settle here
were Benjamin Ellis, Nathan Houghton, a Mr. Downs
and a Mr. Gctchell. yir. Houghton was one of the
tirst men of the lown all his man\' useful N'cars. He
l8 HISTOKKAL
had sons Nathan, Jr., (ierrv, Seth, Zalmon and Alvin.
Mr. Houghton was the builder of mills at this point
and was the contractor of the bridge when first built.
East Madison.
The part of Madison lying around the lake in the
east part of the town was not settled as early as the
portion along the river. A village sprang up around
the outlet of Wesserrunsett Lake, as Hayden Lake
was known in the early days, and has been known as
East Madison. The first settler here was Elisha Lin-
coln, grandfather of Laban E. Lincoln, a present resi-
dent. He came here in 1802, from Bedford, New
Hampshire, with a pair of oxen, b)' way of Skowhegan.
Mr. Lincoln built the first saw mill and first grist mill
at this point, near the outlet ol Llayden Lake. The
dam was in practically the same place as the dam ol'
the woolen mill today. He bought, of Peter Sanborn,
three hundred and tifty acres of land on the east side
of the lake, paying ibr the same the sum ot $1200.
The date the deed bears is 1S04. This was when
Maine was a part of Massachusetts, and Somerset was
included within the bounds of Kennebec. This por-
tion of the territorx was called in this deed Barnard's
town.
Other settlers soon followed Mr. Lincoln. Daniel
Reed came here soon after and located on the farm-
where his grandson, Eben Reed now lives. He came
from Abbington, Mass. Gersham Harvell was one to
come about this time, from New Hampshire, and locat-
ed on the farm where his grandson, Gersham Harvell,
now lives Joseph Jenkins came not long after and
HISTORICAL 19
took up the farm where Charles and Joseph Thompson
now live. He was also from New Hampshire, Mr.
Hobart, afterwards a citizen of Madison, settled about
this time in Solon. His native place was Pepperell,
N. H. He had the honor of being a Revolutionary
soldier. Robert Morrison was another of the early
ones in this part of the town. He came from Farm-
ington and ran the grist mill at this place for many
years. Robert Dean, another Revolutionar}' soldier
and the father of twenty-four children, settled not long
after Mr. Lincoln came here. Jedediah Hayden, who
settled on the west side of the lake, was also an early
comer. He had a son William who was also reckoned
with the early settlers. Mr. Hayden settled on the
farm now owned h\ David Rowxll.
CHAPTER III.
Military Matters
General Survey — The War of the Rebellion — List ol
Men from Madison.
The militar}- history of the towns of Madison and
Anson is a source of just pride. The deeds of bravery
performed b}' men from these towns is only known in
part, but the loyalty they exhibited in going to the iield
of combat to defend the principles of civil liberty can-
not be obscured by any lapse of time. We of today
who know of the scenes of war only as we hear them
discussed trom the lips of others little realize the
nature of the battlefield and its accompanying condi-
tions. We little realize the sacrifice that the soldier
20 IIISTOKRAr.
made as he left the scenes of home and business acti^■-
ity, but we can ncN-er, as h)yal citizens, ourselves fail
to respect and admire the men who left all and went
forth in answer to the country's call for aid.
These towns were settled about the time of the
opening of the great Re\()lution by w^hich America
severed the cords which bound us to Great Britain.
Several ol her citizens either saw service in the Conti-
nental arm\' before coming here, or enlisted after hav-
ing settled at this point. However the list is so incom-
plete we attempt no enumeration of names. After the
settlers had made a beginning here in tlie wilderness,
as it was at that time, there was almost no opportunit\-
for them to Icaxe their homes, as any continued ab-
sence meant starxation for the families lelt behind.
When the W-av of i8ii came the stand taken by
New England was of such a nature that the District
of Maine saw but little acti\e ser\ice. The war was
very unpopular in New England. The Federalists
were in power here, and were bitterlv hostile to the
whole polic\' oi' tlie Central <>-o\ernment. Though the
people as a whole lacked no degree of patriotism the
party in power in these states confined its action to the
defence of the coast. However there were man\-
New England men in the ser\ ice of the Ignited ^States
in their individual capacitw
From this time on there was but little trouble of a
national character which concerned this portion of the
country to an\- considerable extent till the breaking out
of the Ci\il War. Then came the supreme test of the
Republican (ioxermiunt which we had been accus-
tomed to call inxinciblc. It was the severest test to
which any government was e\ er put and stood the test
success lullw It was the internal nature of the struo-
HISTORICAL 2 1
gle that made it severe. Nothing but the greatest
effort on the part of all loyal eitizens eould have kept
the eountr\' intaet.
It was lour years of uneertainty iVom tlie opening-
gun of the war at Fort Sumpter till the surrender at
Appomattox. When the word flashed aeross the eoun-
try that peaee had eome there was not a hamlet north
or south, east or west, but what responded to the thrill
of joy.
In this eontest these two towns met their responsi-
bility lo\alIy. We have thought it well to give here-
with a list of the names of men from the town ol
Madison and Anson Lower Village, and corrected as
carelully as circumstances will permit, we gi^'e it be-

Manufacturing Account.
Early Manufacturing — Mills and their Location — Re-
cent Development — Woolen Mills — Paper Mills —
Miscellaneous.
Twenty years seems but a short time as one
glances backward over a period of this length, but
much may be accomplished in that time. True this is
in the case of the development of manufacturing in
the town of Madison. Twenty years ago Madison had
nothing but a few miscellaneous industries which were
of little importance. They were confined to the local
saw mills, grist mills, and a sash and blind factory of
small size. Today she is one of the leading towns ot
the State in amount and importance of her output ol
HISTORICAL 23
manufactured goods. Hundreds of people find em-
ployment in her factories, scores ot merchants are en-
abled to in\est their money with hope of sutHcient
business to bring good returns. Hotels flourish, resi-
dences and tine business blocks are built, and the town
is well on tlie road to rank with the cities of the State.
^:AKL^ mili,s in madison.
The tirst grist mill built in the village ot' Madison
was built by one William Adams. It was located on
Jones' Brook not far from the new Pine Street Bridge.
It was built not far trom i(Soo.
The next one w^as built on the island by Oriah
Tinkham. Its date we cannot give with certainty, but
it is said to have been in operation as early as 1825.
It was owned by Messrs. Spaulding, Viles and Heald.
About the time that Mr. Adams built his grist mill
on Jones' Brook, Mr. Benjamin Ellis erected a saw
mill, about 1800, on this same stream. It was located
a little higher up the stream. The mill was carried
away in 1810 at the time of a freshet. Another mill
was soon built b}" Nathan Houghton on the site of the
mill later owned by Zalmon Houghton. It is still in
operation.
Near the old bridge, some time after the dam was
built, Nathan Houghton built a saw mill, and in this
mill some of the timbers used in the old Toll Bridge
were sawed. The greater part of the sawed timber
used in the construction of the Patterson toll bridge
was sawed in the mill at this point. This mill passed
from the hands of Mr. Houghton to Cyrus Fletcher,
then the following in order: Heald, Spaulding & Co.,
B. T. Dinsmore, Nathan Wood, P. Fletcher & Son,
J I CONTENTS
John & Abrani McKenney, Ilackett & Town, T. H. &
B. P. J. Weston, and linally the Great Northern Paper
Company.
The sash and bhnd lactory was built on the island
at a \ery earh" date. In the great freshet of 18,32 this
structure was carried away. It was rebuilt in the sum-
mer of the same year by J. S. Hardy and Nathan
Wood. Hardy boui^ht out Wood in 1859. The mill
was burned in 1862. It was rebuilt on a different site
by Mr. Hardy, who later sold a half interest to Mr. L.
F. Edwards," and the other part to T. H. & B. P.J.
Weston. These parties soon converted it into a paint
shop. It later went into the hands of the Great
Northern Paper Compan)-.
On the site of Blackwell Block one Alfred
Twombley owned and operated a tannery in the early
years. It was tinallv abandoned and torn down.
The old starch factory was built by Mr. Strick-
land, and operated many years. It has since been torn
down. It was afterwards run by Nathan Wood, B. T.
Dinsmore, and was also owned by T. H. Weston.
On the Anson side of the Kennebec, below the
end of the dam, a grist mill was erected and operated,
about 1836, by Elisha Bennett. We are told that the
building is still in use on this side of the ri\er. The
old channel and other marks ot the site are discernible
even at this day.
RECENT DEVELOPMENT.
As we have previously mentioned, the real devel-
opment in the manufacturing historv of the town of
Madison came with the ushering in of the decade of
the 8o's. This was the time when the Westons betran
HISTORIC AT. 25
the agitation of the matter of building a woolen mill
at this village. .Vt first the project met with but little
success, but b\" means of a large amount of hard work
Mr. Weston succeeded in' c^irrying out the project.
The Madison Woolen Company was organized in
i<S<Si with a capital of $100,000.
Ground was broken on the 14th ot" April, i<S.Si,
and the mill was then hurried to completion. After
about four years of successful operation of the first
mill, which w^e should say was the present wooden
structure of the Madison mill, a project was launched
to erect another mill, or an addition to the one alread}-
in operation. On May 14, 1885, the stockholders of
the IMadison Woolen Company met in New York, at
the office of J. R. Libby & Co., and voted to increase
the capital stock $100,000 for the building and equip-
ment of a new mill. The building committee con-
sisted of the following: T. II. and B. P. J. Weston;
the committee on machinery w^ere A. P. Benjamin and
V. |. Goodspeed. Norton & Purinton were the con-
tractors for the stone and brick work and S. M.
Coombs was the architect. The bricks were made at
Weston's brick-yard in this village.
The mill was dedicated March 3, 1886. Some
particulars may be of interest. The length of the mill
was 163 feet; breadth, 58 feet; and was four stories
high, with a flat gravelled roof. The mill contains 76
windows, 1,400,000 bricks, 1 130 yards of stone, 1060
casks of cenient, 13^ tons of wrought iron and cast
iron, and 3 tons of nails.
The machinery of the picker-room was started on
February 4, 1886. A few looms were started in
March of that year.
In connection with this project there were sixteen
tenement houses completed.
26 HISTORICAL
The Indian Spring Woolen Company was organ-
ized in 1887, on |ui\- 6th. It was under the manage-
ment of the II. |. Libby Co. Its eapital stock was
$ioo,oo(^. Tlie first officers were T. II. Weston, pres-
ident: A. \\ Ik-njamin, \ ice jircsident; ]. B. Libby,
treasurer.
Tlie contractors for the brick and stone work were
Johnson & Johnson. The chmensions ot the mill were
as follows: Length, 136 feet; width, 56 feet; four
stories high in tront and fi\e in back. The mill was
completed in the same \ear ot its beginning, Decem-
ber 3, 1887. In its construction there were used
1,186,855 bricks.
These two mills ha\e been a source ot great pros-
perity to this town. No one can estimate the amount
of labor that was necessarx' to get the project started.
It required many months of" toil, as the opposition was
strong. The mill that was nicknamed "Weston's
Folly'' has, howexer, since become one of Madison's
bulwarks ot prosperitw
In 1 888, D. M. Dickinson of Michigan and I. M.
Weston of the same state and a native of the State ol
Maine, together with other capitalists, bought the pat-
ent rights, for the United States and Canada, of reduc-
ing wood to pulp by a German process of acid treat-
ment. They sold this right under royalt}' to one mill
in Canada and two in the ITnited States. The original
I purchasers were bought out by other capitalists, among
whom were several members of President Cleveland's
cabinet, viz: William C. Whitney and Daniel S. La-
mont. Senator Payne was also a large owner. The
corporation was known as the ^Lmufacturing Invest-
ment Company, and was organized under the laws of
the State ol" New )erse\-, A t'ter considerable discus-
HISTORICAL 27
sion, Madison was selected as the place for the build-
ing of the Eastern plant. I. M. Weston loyally sup-
ported Madison's interest in this matter and all Madi-
son people owe Mr. Weston a debt of gratitude for his
instrumentality in securing for her this enormous in-
dustry.
A long time was used in clearing up the land titles
of the property around Norridgewock Falls, here at
Madison. Two able lawyers were employed for a
long time. Two hundred and fifty deeds were copied
in this long process, but at length, on June 17, 1890,
the company's attorne}' declared the papers complete
and the corporation took possession.
The huge mill was over two years in building.
Its total length is over 900 feet. As it was managed at
first it was not a profitable investment, and soon fore-
closure proceedings were instituted. However, the
firm was reorganized as the Great Northern Paper
Company, as it is known at the present time. Under
the present management the plant has been successful
and is one of the leading industries of the Kennebec
Valley, furnishing employment to a large number ot
persons.
While the operations ot this company here in
Madison have been a great source of prosperity to the
people of the town its future gives promise of being-
tar greater in its scope. Operations are in progress
for the erection of a new mill only a short distance
below the present mill, and a portion of the dam. is
already constructed. It is hoped that this nev/ indus-
try may not long be delayed.
Other mills of recent date doing much to pro-
mote the welfare and prosperity of the community are
Weston's saw mill a short distance above the railroad

ICASr MADISON IN' DUSTRIIiS.
Madison's manutaeUiring industries are not wholly
eonfined to Madison X'illage. East Madison has fur-
nished her portion ol' the manufacturing during all the
past century. In fact, long before there was an\-
thought ot" building an\ mill ol consequence at Madi-
son Bridge there was a well-equipped woolen mill at
East Madison, together with I'ulling and cloth dressing-
mills, tanneries, saw and grist mills.
So far as wc are able to learn Elisha Lincoln, the
tirst settler in this part of the to\\n, was the builder ol
the tirst saw and grist mill. It was located on the out-
let of Ha\den Lake on the site of the present woolen

a new and larger mill \\ ith a chair manufactory in one
part of it. In i<S4_^ this mill was burned and was re-
placed by a smaller mill. The cloth dressing and
carding mill was burned at the same time. This mill
was built sometime in the io's. It was never rebuilt.
The woolen mill was located here in 1S55. The
powers and privileges were bought and the mill was
built in this same year. The concern was known as
the Wesserrunsett Woolen Company. It employed
about one hundred persons. This mill was doomed to
fire in about three years. The year 1858 saw its
destruction. In itSyo the present mill was erected and

At the "I^ower Mills'', about one-hall mile below

The grist mill at this place was built by Aaron and
Iliram Ilobart. 'I'he date was not iar Irom 1(850.
The saw mill was burned and another built in about
i860 or a little earlier, by Daniel and Joel Hobart. to
take its place. The mill is owned today by Daniel
Ilobart.
About i8_|_(3 a shingle mill was built a short dis-
tance below the \illage by John Cook. A part of the
same mill is standing todaw and with the additions that
ha\ e been made is owned by Willis Ilobart. Up near
the outlet of the lake, prior to i860, Issiah Cushing
built a saw mill and shingle mill.
Nathaniel Chadbourn built a tannery about 1840
on this same stream, about twenty rods below the ]-)res-
ent woolen mill. It was torn down about i8go. An-
other tannery was built on the same site as occupied
hv the present woolen mill. It was built \er\' early,
the date being uncertain.

The Madison firidge — Dates — Patterson P>ridge — Date.
The Norridgewock Falls Toll Bridge was built in
1829, on the authority of the charter granted by the
State for the purpose in 1825. The owners were
30
HISTORICAL
formed into a stock company, and the same corpora-
tion continued to hold the property till 1902 when the
agitation for a tree bridge, after the old Toll Bridge
had been destroyed in the freshet of 1901 made it nec-
essary for the two towns of Anson and Madison to
build a free bridge. The builder of the toll bridge was
Nathan Houghton. The first owners were Benjamin
Ellis, Nathan Houghton, Capt. George Gray and Elijah
Hilton.
In 1832 the Toll Bridge was carried away in part,
the freshet of that year being very severe. It has sus-
tained several severe injuries in other freshets but was
not carried out since 1832, till 1901 when the freshet
that came on so suddenly in December completely de-
stroyed it.
In the early days when the towns were so situated
as to render the building of suitable bridges over the
large rivers and streams impossible, the toll bridge,
built by private capital, was a great convenience, but
when years had rolled by and the municipalities have
become more solid, financially, the toll bridge became
the object of much dissatisfaction wherever located.
This was true of the one at Madison and Anson Low-
er Village. When the freshet of 1901 destro3'ed it, a
move was immediately made to replace it with a free
bridge. It would be expensive of course and there
was much controversy over the matter, especiall}' in
the town of Anson, but the bridge was built, and is a
most excellent piece of workmanship.
We have compiled for this work the following
from the town records of Madison:
"Meeting of Town of Madison on January 18, 1902.
"The warrant lor this meeting contained the fol-
lowing article: To see if the town will vote to pur-

"A committee ot three was appointed to obtain

The following was the committee: C. A. A\^ilbur, C.

In due time there arose a line steel bridge near
the site of the former bridge, which is all that an3-one
could desire. Its strength, and line proportions stand
out in contrast with the qualities of its predecessor.
In this connection one is reminded of the sad accident
which occurred many }ears ago on the old toll bridge.
Mr. Benjamin Baxter relates to us the account of the
accident sid^tstantiall}- as t'ollows: "In the days beibre
the railroad had reached tliis portion of the \-alley all
the goods and pro\isi()ns used in the section to the
north of us was hauled with teams along the Ivenne-
bec trom the larger towns 'down ri\ er\ A great jvirt
of the travel went o\er the toll bridge at this point.
One daN- a lour horse team hea\ ily loaded started a-
cross the bridge, in spite of the ad\ ice gi\en not to at-
tempt the crossing with so hea\ \ a load. All went
well till the middle pier was nearl\- reached when a
crash was heard and the wagon went quickl\ to ihe
raging torrent below, carrying with it the dri\er him-
selt and the two pole horses. The leaders succeeded
in breaking away, and were stopped on the Anson side
by Mr. Baxter who witnessed the accident. The man
was instantly killed as well as the horses which went
with him. IIowe\er a large amount ol the goods
floated and were collected below the village."
The Patterson Bridge was built in 1839, and was
owned by a stock compan\ . It is located in the north-
western part of Madison, across the Kennebec Ri\"er

"muster" was ha\ ini;- its day in the period when the
Patterson Toll Bridge was erected. It happened that
when a muster was held at North Anson on a certain

who run the i'erry which was in use at this point previous
to the toll bridge made a deal whereby the bridge should
be held back in its progress toward completion so that
those who attended the muster from the east side ot
the ri\ er would be compelled to patronize the lerry.
These parties learning ot the deal, concluded to go
them one better and immediately caught up some ol
the planking which lay on the shore read\- lor use and
constructed in a short time a tiooring sufficient to get
across the ri\er, thereb}- beating the terry at their own

Early Schools — Recent Dc\elopment and Ad\ance-

Education is said to be the bulwark ot' Iree insti-
tutions. However true this ma\- be, certain it is that
the people of New England have e\er so regarded the
problem of social and political lite, 'inhere were some

icw things that the early settler Ibiind necessar\-, such
as the saw mill and the <;rist mill. These he must
ha\e to enable him to proNide food and shelter. But
the next move after securing his mills was to provide
schools and opportunities for religious training.
These schools were of necessity ^'ery crude at
first. In the early days school houses were not pro-
vided. The settlers were each expected to provide a
certain room in his house for school accommodations.
The wages paid were \ery small as compared with the
wages of toda\-. l'\Mnale teachers got not far from
75 cents a week; male teachers received from $12 to
$15 a month and were expected to "board round" at
that. The schools were changed to a great extent after
the separation trom Massachusetts, in 1820. New
courses were introduced, new text books wxmx put in
use and better equipments were pro\ided in almost all
quarters.
With the kind assistance of Prof. T. A. Roberts
and others we have attempted in the following to give
something concerning the schools of Madison.
Mr. Joshua B. Perkins is authority for the state-
ment that the first school house in Madison w^as on
Weston avenue near what is now known as the Blake
place. This was a one-stor)-, fiat-roof building, about
30 feet square. One of the first teachers in this house
was Hon O. L. Currier of New Sharon. Mr. Currier
married Miss Mary Ann Weston, a daughter of Stephen
Weston. Miss Jewett was another early teacher in
this building. Miss Jewett was the mother of B. P.J.
Weston. This school house was built not far from
1804 to 1 810.
It is stated that the Westons and Pipers controlled
the school house question f'or sometime. ^^Mlen more

Notes came in it was deeidetl to change the location ol
the building. The new site selected was on Old Point
avenue not far iVom Mr. Renier's store. One winter
the building caught lire and the root" was burned ot^".
Boards were seciu'cd, the i^ooi replaced, and school
was continued in a lew da\s. I'his school house was
moved in about iiSi6. It remained here a lew years
until Nathan Houghton ga\e a lease of a lot oi land
in "The Holler". On this lot the "Old Red School
House" was built. The lease was drawn up by Hon.
Anson P. Morrill, afterward goNcrnor of the State ol
Maine, but at tliat time a merchant at East Madison,
then the business center of Madison. The usual at-
tendance in the old school house on AVeston axenue
was not i'ar Irom 25 to ]o. ^Ir. l\'rkins has kindly

there. Adeline Jones, Rosanna Houghton, Lucy Piper,
John Jones, T. H. Weston, J. B. Perkins, Marcia Wes-
ton, Bridget Weston, Sarah Weston, Fannie Weston,
C\rus Weston, Enoch Weston, Rulus Weston, Chester
Houghton, Joseph Withee, CaKin Withee, David
Withee and' Parker Withee. The "Old Red School
House" was situated below the Congregational
parsonage. One teacher in this house was Miss
May Osborne of Skowdiegan. Other teachers in this
school house were Miss Bixby, Miss Rideout, Miss
Longley, Asa Dickinson and Mr. Nash. It should be
stated that Mr. Gard Whittier taught a private school
one or more winters at this village. Mr. Darius
Houghton attended school there in 1^42, which was
soon after it was built, tn icSyc) the house became in-
adequate to accomodate the needs of the district and
a school was started in Lincoln Hall, where the larger

\idecl for ;it the ''Red School House". This condition
continued tor about three years when a school house
was built on the corner of Pleasant street and Old
Point avenue. The builder was Henry Abbey. The
tirst teacher when the school was established at Lincoln
Hall was W. W. MaNo, a graduate of Colby College.
B. A. Pease, also a graduate of this same college, was
the successor of Mr. Mayo. C. A. Wilber followed
Mr. Pease in 1880 and taught four years, part of the
time in Lincoln Hall and part of the time in the Pleas-
ant street school house. Mr. Wilber's successor was
M. C. Dow. C. (). Small taught from 1884 till 18S8,
and has ser\ed se\eral years as iSupervisor and Super-
intendent of Schools. Mr. Wilber has also tilled like
positions. P)()th of these men have had a large share
in building up the school interests of the town ol
Madison.
At this point we g■i^■e the names of the other
teachers who have had charge ol the High School in
its ditierent stages since the beginning in Lincoln Hall:
E. L. Pcnnell, '1891; C. D. Boothby,^ 1891 ; E. L. Pen-
nell, 1891; L. P. Sturtevant, 1892; C H. Sturtevant,
1893; F. W. Larrabee, 1894; N. T. Abbott, 1895;
Fred L. Tapley, 1896; E. M. l\icker, 1898; T. A.
Roberts, 1899.
The assistants since 1891 haNc been the following:
Minnie F. Waugh, 1891; Bessie M. Getchell, 1894;
H. Kate Butler,' 1895; Alice Robbins and Bertha M.
Files, 1898; Edith L. Floyd, 1899; ?• E. Graffam,
and Charlotte Towne-Roberts, 1901.
With the incoming of the business prosperit}'
which Madison has had within the last few years, the
improvement and enlargement of the school buildings
became imperatiNc. The Pleasant Street School build-
HTSTORTCAL 3^
ing was built in 1.S.S2. This project of proxidiiig larger
and better accommodations for the schools provoked a
long and animated discussion. It seems strange that
people will condemn enterprises which in a short time
they Mnll indorse, simply because a little mone\- is re-
(]uired to carry it through. Rut sucli cases are the rule
more times than the exception. The argument against
this building was that it was too large for the needs.
Several meetings were held before the matter was set-
tled. The land, one-half an acre in extent, was jnir-
chased of Zebina Dinsmore, the price for the lot being
$100. A few years later an addition was made
which, together with the original cost, amounted to
about $2,500.
The other school buildings in the village have
cost approximatel}' the following: The Main Street
School house, $13,500; the Weston A^•enue School
house, $12,000.
The school districts numbered twenty for the en-
tire town in i<S92. Today there are only eight oi' the
rural schools, which in all contain about 100 pupils,
\N'hile the village schools ha\ e not lar from 375.
The course of studies for the schools, gotten out
by Superintendent C. O. Small in 1893, was of great
assistance in securing a more perfect grading. In 1903
this course was revised by Superintendent Thomas A.
Roberts to conform to the new and changed condi-
tions. Madison's schools are c(]ual to those of any
town of its size in Maine, and the inhabitants take just
pride in them. Madison has never tried to economize
at the expense of her schools. Both village and rural
schools are carefully graded, the latter e\"en to the ex-
tent that regular promotions are made so that there is
no loss of time and energy in the unnecessary repeti-
38 HISTORICAL
tions of certain studies. TIk' text books are tlie latest
and thoroughly up-to-date. Music was introduced by
Superintendent Roberts at the beginning of the sum-
mer term, 1902, and Mrs. Frank Dinsmore, a former
teacher under C. O. Small, Esc]., was engaged as the
regular instructor. On Mrs. Dinsmore's resignation,
in 1903, Prof. Elmer E. Towne became the teacher ot
music. TMost excellent results ha\ e been obtained,
which will be more appreciated when the pupils shall
have reached maturity.
THE HIGH StTIOOL.
The most excellent record made by the Madison
High School deserves special mention. We quote
the exact words of one who is thoroughly conversant
with the conditions: ''The growth ot the high school
has been steady. During the past tive years the
growth has been more marked. The a^•erage attend-
ance for the year i89(S-9 was thirty-three. For this
present fall term, 1903, the attendance is ninety. Tlie
school now nimibers nearh" fort\' bo\s. Additions
ha\e been made to the High School curriculum until
now it tits for our best colleges. RepresentatiNcs can
be found in Colby, Bates, University ol Maine, and
Boston University. During the past tour years thirty-
eight students have been graduated, and the graduating
class numbers tilteen this year. The first class was
graduated March 15, 1889, and following are the mem-
bers: Ploma M. Hilton, Gusta H. Tmkham, S. Eu-
gene Remick and Nathan A. Weston.

room was titled up with the latest ecpiipments in the

In looking forward we can see nothing but the
brightest prospects lor the schools of Madison.

Merchants AiNd Professional Men.
Early Merchants — Stores — Lawyers — Doctors.
^ladison had the usual countr}' stores in her earh-
historw These were general in their nature, and their
stock was housed in private houses and later in public
places, but it was left for the coming ot the mills to
bring to Madison her stores with their special lines, ot
dry goods, clothing, groceries, and hardware placed in
tine blocks.
In searching the records in this direction we learn
that the tirst merchant in Madison was Zebina Hough-
ton, son of Nathan Houghton, who was builder of the
tirst Toll Bridge. Zebina was a shoe maker. He had
his store on the Island, and was toll-gatherer when the
bridge was first built.
The others were not numerous but we learn that
the following were in trade here, and they came in
very near the following order: Benjamin Spaulding,
John Whorlf', Washington Rowell and Calvin Fletcher
who later went west. These in their order occupied
the Red Store which alterwards became Lincoln Hall.
40 HISTORICAL
The snow store so called, which was situated on the
Island, was built by Ileald, Spauldiiig, & Viles. It was
later occupied bN- William Snow and b}- Bradbury
Dinsmore. Daniel Maxin & Son also carried on a gen-
eral stores trade in this store. Some time alter Mr.
Maxim had closed out his business, D. W. Simonds
traded here.
PKOJ'ESSIONAL Ml<:\.
The towns of Madison and Anson ha\ e been well
provided tor the last twenty }ears with legal talent,
but prior to that time there was onh' one lawyer who
located in this \'icinit\". This was one William Has-
kell who located on the Anson side and lived in the
house where F. D. Gilman now li\es. Others who
have been in practice in Madison are the following:
Johnson & Johnson, Charles A. Wilber, who came
here as a teacher from New Portland, Charles O. Small
who also came here as a teacher, and as did Mr. Wil-
ber, served the town successfully as Superintendent of
Schools, Bernard Gibbs and J. W. Foster. B. S. Col-
lins and Augustine Simmons, both of North Anson,
ha\ e had branch offices here within the last few years.
In this connection it is well to note that J. F. Witiiee
was the first Trial Justice in the town of Madison. He
received his commission in 1890 and has been in oHice
since that date. Other justices are W. W. Johnson
and George F. Newell on the Anson side.
The first physican to locate in the town of Madi-
son was Dr. Sumner Gould. The town was ser^•ed bv
other physicians prior to his arrixal but they were from
other towns. The successors of Dr. Goufd have been
the following: Dr. C. D. Morrill, Dr. Kent, Dr. D. S.

HISTORICAL
METIIODIS'I" CIILRCII.
Tlic records of Methodism in Madison and Anson
Lower \'illai;;e in its early days are nearly obliterated.
Some facts are lio\ve\er preserved and we have at-
tempted to L;i\ e them. 'I'he first record is of the exis-
tence of a class meetini;- on the .\nson side held a't the
house of Thomas lleald. The date is uncertain, but
not far from 1S35. About 1S34, according to rumor,
John l\'rrin preached here. Nearly all is a blank until
1S51 when meetings were held at the church which
stood at the corner of ^Nlain and Maple streets, the
Union House in which the Methodists held enough
pews to secure the use of the church a lourth of the
time. The Congregationalists occupied it the remain-
der ot the time, having a resident pastor. M. D. Wel-
come was pastor about this time. Not far from this
time James Farrington of Wilton preached here, and it
was during his pastorate that the division of church
property occurred. The Methodists then removed
their place of worship to the Anson side. Here they
worshiped in a church in Ihiion \\'ith the Free Baptists.
This continued trom 1N54 to December, 1883 when
the new church was dedicated. During this time oc-
casional ser\ices were held by the Methodists at Black-
M^ell Ilill. ^Meetings mere held also at Whorff's Cor-
ner. The preachers ser\i ng during this period were
the Ibllowing: j. R. l)ailey, James Farrington, Isaac
Lord, True Whittier. Joseph Mooar, A. II. Reed, P.
E. Brown, C. K. E\ ans^, A. W. Waterhouse, C. E. Bis-

rXlNERSALIST CHURCH.
The tirst I' nixersalist parish ot' ^laclison, Maine,
was organized in L'nion llall in the town oi Madison
on the sixth day oi' januar\-, A. I). 1892.
The first pastor was Rew Donald Frazer, who
continued as such until January, 1894. T-he second

\\^. Hooper supplied in the absence oi" a settled pastor.
At the time Mr. Rhoades took up the work here
the societN' was worshiping in E^nion Ilall. lie saw
at once that a church was not only necessary but pos-
sible, so he set out with characteristic energy to supply
the long ielt need. The result oi' Mr. Rhoatles' eii'ort
ma\- be seen t'rom the following: "■'J'he parish now
owns a nice large lot on the east side oi Weston
a^■enue in ^Madison \Mllage and has a nice chapel
nearl\- completed on the same.*"
CATHOLIC ciin^cH.
It ma\' be said that the Catholic church at ?sladi-

there seems to be no record either as a ehiireh oi- a
mission, until within the hist t\vent\- years, when the
Rev. Father La Croix of Skowhegan had charge ot
Madison as a mission. About two years ago Rew
Father Keale\- ot" Belfast was appointed pastor ot' the
church at Madison. Ori his arrival here he found
about se\ent\' families with no place ot worship. He
immediateh- began plans to suppl)- the needs ot" his
people with a church, and has under construction a
church, located on Folsom street, which will cost
about $6000.
